Backpacking with Troop 22

Food

Keep in mind that you will not have a cooler.  Plan your meals taking care to avoid any ingredients that will require refrigeration.  Think light -- you have to carry all of this stuff!

Meal Planning

  • Each patrol is expected to plan in advance and get approval for all patrol meals for the outing.  Typically this will include Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast and Sunday lunch with a sack lunch for Saturday.  Check out the specifics for the individual outing for variations on this!

  • Meals must be balanced and follow the food pyramid guidelines.

  • Use a Meal planner form and get it approved by the Scoutmaster before you go shopping!

Shopping

  • At least 2 boys from the patrol need to go shopping for the food supplies required for the campout during the week prior to the campout.  (This is not a job for parents!).

  • Food costs are split among all participants and should be around $10 per person (not to exceed $15 per person).

Duty Roster

At each campout, each patrol is expected to create, use and post a Duty Roster which details which tasks are to be performed by which Scouts.

Equipment

  • Troop Camping Equipment must be reserved through the Troop Quartermaster well in advance of the outing.

  • See permission slip for packing list - Pack light!

  • Backpack: You will need a properly fitting backpack for this outing.  If you do not own a backpack you can rent one for the weekend.  Adventure 16 in Tarzana will do a good job of selecting and fitting the backpack.  So will REI in Northridge.  Sport Chalet at the Fallbrook Mall also rents equipment but the selection is limited.

  • Shoes:  You will need comfortable hiking shoes and good hiking socks.  Plan well in advance, you don't want to hike in new boots!  Do your hiking boots still fit?
