My Eagle Project Description

            The Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project which I am proposing will take place at Pierce College, in the Southwest corner of the campus near an area known as Cañon De Lana. It consists of 1) either cleaning graffiti from, or repainting the bridge, tables, and electric box, as well as 2) repairing or replacing the small wooden pump house, 3) repairing or replacing the picnic benches and tables, and 4) building or having donated some sort of attractive housings for the trash cans in the area. We will also be removing litter from the immediate vicinity, especially the pond area.

            My project will benefit Pierce College as well as the local community who will now be able to utilize this portion of the campus which is set aside as a nature preserve and picnic area. This area has been more or less closed to the public for years and even some of the grounds keeping staff did not know what to expect when we got there. However since they now desire to utilize this area, they would be very appreciative if I were able to stage my Eagle Project at this location.

Project Details

Present condition: Area that has been closed off to the public and received little or

                                    no maintenance for several years.

Clean graffiti from/ Paint:

                                                - bridge

                                                - tables

                                                - electric box

                                                - pump house

Repair/Refurbish/Replace:

                                                - design and build new pump house

                                                - obtain/build trash can housing

                                                - repair loose/broken planks in bridge

- replace benches and tables (so that there are at least three handicapped accessible)

Remove:

                                                - litter

                                                - broken benches/tables

                                                - existing pump house

                                                - planks from bridge (if replaced)                                 

Materials:         - (power) saw, wood and screw guns for pump house (cement for base

                                    to prevent exposure to standing water

                        - latex gloves and trash bags to remove trash

                        - paint (anti graffiti)

                        - pressure washer and hose for removing graffiti (water key)

                        - wood/cement for trash can housing

                        - possibly wood planks and bolts

                        - benches/paint

                        - first aid kit

Safety hazards-             1) unsanitary conditions while removing trash

                                    2) use of tools

Solutions to safety hazards-       1) latex gloves

2) work gloves and proper supervision (goggles for  use with saw)

                                                            Have first aid kit on site during project

                                                            Designate a “first aider”
